Why Wesleyan Produces Leaders

wesleyan-experience

Wesleyan women aren’t accustomed to holding anything back. They’ve been speaking up and speaking out since Wesleyan opened its doors in 1836. Liberal arts colleges for women attract women who believe they can change inequalities. At Wesleyan, we are intentional about providing an education that prepares women to be agents of change and advocates for social justice as professionals, community leaders, and family members. Not all students arrive here as leaders. But once on our campus, Wesleyan women find themselves surrounded by people who are absolutely convinced they can do anything. We think the world needs Wesleyan women like never before, and that’s why we’re committed to teaching you about character, conscience, and the unlimited creativity you have to transform the world. That’s why, and here’s how:

  • Our small campus provides greater leadership opportunities—on the athletic field, in student organizations, in academics, and in the community. You’ll have access to not only lots of leadership roles but also lots of support from faculty and staff to help you balance priorities, manage time, and seize key opportunities.
  • Our single-sex student body lets you focus and encourages you to become an active participant, not just an observer, in class discussions and labs. Women’s colleges are linked to leadership. One third of the female board members of Fortune 1000 companies graduated from women's colleges.
  • Freedom of expression is encouraged and expected. In fact, The Princeton Review’s 2009 Best 368 ranks Wesleyan number nine on “Class Discussion Encouraged.” Our professors truly do inspire spirited discussion and debate, challenging students to think across disciplines and to delve into moral and ethical issues. Not only are students required to be prepared and to speak up, but they’re also required to invest fully in their own futures.
  • Leadership Development is a high priority here. Special opportunities such as the Summer Leadership Institute let Wesleyan women interact with leaders in their respective fields of study. The Institute meets in cities around the country, tackling topics from genetics to urban revitalization. Our Pioneer Leadership Program identifies prospective campus leaders and gives them leadership training through workshops, conferences, lectures, and discussion groups.
