Athletics and Recreation

We were pioneers in women's higher education, so what better name for our athletic teams than the Pioneers? The Wesleyan Pioneers compete in five intercollegiate NCAA Division III sports: soccer, basketball, cross country, tennis and softball, regularly winning honors from the GSAC (Great South Athletic Conference). Even better: Wesleyan players are athlete-scholars, consistently named to the GSAC All-Academic team.

Our equestrians don't just horse around either. Recently, we've had two national champions in hunt seat and western events. However, novice riders are warmly welcomed at Wesleyan's magnificent Nancy Ellis Knox Equestrian Center. (You may even bring your horse! Just be sure to check that space is available in our limited boarding facilities.)

Club sports (like volleyball) and student-organized athletic activities (like fencing and tae kwon do) are popular among our students, too. Or if you'd rather get some exercise without joining a team, you can swim at the Porter Gym and lift weights, work out, run laps, or pick up an aerobics, spinning, yoga or Zumba class at the 10,000-square-foot two-leveled Mathews Athletic Center.
