Exploring Wesleyan's Curriculum
Wesleyan only offers one undergraduate degree, the Bachelor of Arts. As you earn that one degree, you'll acquire countless new ideas and perspectives. Our liberal arts focus results in students who think critically and write and speak effectively. Equipped with a liberal arts background, Wesleyan women leave campus with a unique perspective that makes them highly competitive for any professional field and quite successful at whatever they choose to do. In fact, you'll find Wesleyan women excelling in every field, including medicine, science, law, politics, civil service, education, business, engineering and fine arts.
General Education: A WISE Course
Every Wesleyan woman takes a group of General Education courses emphasizing writing, critical thinking, quantitative analysis and artistic expression. The course of study starts off with the Wesleyan Integrative Seminar Experience (WISE), a seminar on women and the tools they need to succeed.
Choosing a Major
The General Education curriculum lets you sample courses from each of Wesleyan's four academic divisions. That sampling may help you choose a field of concentration from one of the 29 majors we offer or give you ideas to design your own major. You may opt for one of our eight pre-professional tracks instead. We offer 26 minors as well.
Internships
An important component of a Wesleyan education is real-world experience. We encourage students to complete at least one internship and we have the contacts and connections to land Wesleyan women in such places as:
- The Carter Center
- Center for Disease Control
- Central Georgia Opera Guild
- Georgia Bureau of Investigation
- Georgia Senate
- High Museum of Art
- Macon Crime Lab
- Mercer Medical School
- Merrill Lynch
- The Weather Channel
- 13 WMAZ TV News
Center of Everything: Four Centers for Excellence
"Striving for excellence. Grounded in faith. Engaged in service to the world."
These have been Wesleyan's ideals since its founding in 1836. In today's world, they're more important than ever. To strengthen those ideals and ensure they come alive on and off campus, we have created four Centers for Excellence. The Centers quite literally extend the campus—bringing the world to Wesleyan and taking Wesleyan students into the world. All Centers target triple goals: support student programs, promote faculty development and reach out to the community.
- The Lane Center for Community Engagement initiates community leadership development and coordinates projects such as Aunt Maggie's Kitchen Table, Wesleyan Volunteers for Literacy, Habitat for Humanity, conferences and other outreach efforts. Service is part of Wesleyan's curriculum, which includes several courses with a service component, not just tacked on as a burdensome requirement, but integrated fully into the classroom experience. We aspire to be a force for understanding and affecting the social, governmental and economic forces that shape women's lives, both locally and globally.
- The Center for Women in Science and Technology not only provides resources for Wesleyan women in mathematics, natural science and technology but also promotes interest in science among young girls. The Center is located in the Munroe Science Center but its outreach efforts extend well beyond our campus. Wesleyan science scholars travel to local elementary schools and lead hands-on experiments through the KISMET program and they design exciting summer experiences for middle school girls on our campus through the successful SPECTACLES camp program. The Center also sponsors visits by nationally known scientists, expanded pre-professional education and summer continuing-education programs for science and math teachers in our area.
- The Center for Educational Renewal promotes positive social change through the education of exemplary teachers. This Center creates partnerships with local agencies, develops alternative ways for preparing teachers and promotes meaningful study of the problems of today's educational systems. Many programs address the critical need for qualified teachers through evening courses and other alternative programs to encourage professionals to enter and advance in the teaching profession.
- The Center for Creative and Performing Arts is the dynamic source behind exhibits, workshops, artist-in-residence programs, audition and portfolio reviews and focused internships. A wide variety of visual, performing and literary arts experiences organized through this center of excellence bring excitement and large crowds to our campus. This Center is also responsible for maintaining and enhancing the College's considerable collection of art holdings.
